Winter has always been a source of negativity for me. I hate being cold, being outside in it, the darkness, the ice….basically everything about it I don’t like. However, this year I have done a few things to try to make Winter a little less sad for myself. Here’s what’s working for me!

  • Take a multivitamin with Vitamin D in it: It can be hard to get the required amount of vitamin d with the short days and less time outdoors, so I decided to take a multi-vitamin that contained vitamin d. I definitely think it has helped my mood and happiness overall. Check with your dr if you want to know what might be a good vitamin to fit your own health needs.
  • Bundle up and go outside on a regular basis: Forcing myself to go outside on a regular basis has been probably my number one game changer. Now that I’m a mom, going outside with Aubrey is so important. I want her to enjoy all seasons and all weather. I tend to push myself to go outside and never regret it after! Even on those super cold days, we go outside! Bundling up is a chore, but even just 5-10 minutes helps with both of our moods. A little fresh air is good for everyone, no matter the season.
  • Replace negativity with positivity: Anytime I’m feeling like I want to complain, I stop myself mentally. Instead, I try to put a positive spin on things. Instead of complaining that I’m tired of the bitter temperatures, I feel thankful for layers and a great winter jacket that allows me to go outside and enjoy fresh air on the coldest of days.
  • Commit to doing something that you love on a daily basis: Finding something you feel good about to get involved in can really help on those long winter days. I joined a mom’s Bible study on Friday mornings, committed to working out Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, and make an effort to meet with my friends once a month.
  • Find a good exercise routine for you: Working out has lots of benefits but improving mood and sleep is one of the highest reasons on my list. I rarely feel like working out, but I commit to do so becuase I know it’s best for me. I feel best with a combo of yoga/pilates, HIIT, and strength training. Finding workouts that you don’t hate doing is key to staying consistent.

Hope these five suggestions help you get through the rest of the winter. I have chosen to enjoy each season to the fullest, and making that mental choice has made all the difference.
